Between 24/06/24 – 25/08/24 a second survey of community views was carried out. It covered issues such as Housing, Design, Business and Jobs, Community facilities and more.
Here is a summary of the results:
On Housing the survey asked respondents what they thought were the most important types of new homes that are needed. The top three were [1] family homes, [2] affordable social rented or owner occupier homes, and [3] one & two bedroom homes for single people and couples.
When asked in what ways the necessary new homes should be delivered, the top three were [1] development on brownfield sites, [2] small scale rounding off on the edge of settlements, and [3] infill between existing dwellings.
The survey identified a potential 25 people currently or formerly living in the Parish [ie living with parents or relatives or had to move away to find accommodation] who would like to have their own accommodation in the Parish. These are known as ‘hidden households’.
A small number of people said they might want to move home in the Parish in the next few years, mostly seeking upgrades to detached houses and bungalows.
The top type of affordable housing people thought should be supplied were [1] starter homes, [2] shared ownership and [3] rent-to-buy.
On second homes, the top 3 impacts perceived were that they restrict the amount of housing available to local people, [2] they force house prices up beyond the reach of local people and [3] reduce local school rolls making them less viable. Most people supported the idea of restricting new properties so that they had to be used as new residents main home only.
On Business and Jobs, half those who responded thought they would need additional space in the future, in the form of modern workshop space or an extension to their home to accommodate home working needs, and more storage space.
Respondents thought that the best business sectors to encourage in the Parish were [1] agriculture/farming/horticulture/forestry and small holdings, [2] small scale industry, workshops and crafts and [3] live/work units combining living space with workspace.
On Heritage and Design and Local Green Spaces, suggestions of places that should be given protection included Porkellis Moor, Porkellis village hall, the common land around the old mining areas, the old mining area itself, the old stone circle and nearby fogou, land around the Wendron cricket club, and the lake at Stithians.
When asked what Local Amenities and Facilities should be protected, people said the top 3 were [1] village local shops [2] village/community halls and pubs and [3] the school. Just under a third of respondents felt that the broadband and mobile phone signal did not meet their domestic, social or business needs.
Respondents were also asked which settlement they identified with. The large majority selected their local villages and countryside, with only a few identifying with other areas such as Helston and Four Lanes.
What Happens Next?
The Steering group will review the results, along with the previous survey and the social, environmental and economic material gathered in the evidence base. A draft of the new Plan will be based on this review, and published for community comments later this year. Please watch out for a leaflet explaining the new Plan and how you can have your say on it, which will arrive by post in due course.
